PDP REACTS ON KOGI ELECTIONS

Declare Wada Winner, PDP Tells INEC, Says APC Has Legally “Crashed” Out Of Kogi Election

Idris-Wada-votes
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Governor Idris Wada of the PDP as winner of the November 21 inconclusive governorship election in Kogi State.
The opposition party made this position known in a communique issued at the end of its emergency national caucus meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.
The communique, read by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, among others, demanded the exclusion of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the supplementary election slated for December 5.
The INEC had declared the polls inconclusive following the cancellation of elections in 91 units across 18 local government areas in the state.
However, a constitutional logjam ensued with the death of the APC candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu on the day the polls was declared inconclusive by INEC.
The late Audu, according to the results collated and declared so far, had won in 16 out of the 21 local government areas in the state and was leading the PDP candidate with over 41,000 votes.
But the PDP insisted that the APC’s candidate death during the election means the party has legally “crashed out” of the race even as it rejected the decision of INEC to yield to what it termed the “unlawful prompting of a clearly partisan Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mallam Abubakar Malami”, to allow APC substitute its flag bearer in the middle of an election, even when such is alien to the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
The PDP noted that the substitution of a candidate by the APC means the party would have fielded two separate candidates in the same election, a scenario it argued is not only strange to Nigeria’s electoral laws, but also any known democratic norms and practice world-over.
Accusing the APC of orchestrating confusion in the polity with a view to diverting attention from its glaring incompetence and failure of governance, Metuh said the governing party knew it had no case even as he declared the PDP’s lack of confidence in the leadership of INEC under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
According to the PDP, the INEC under Yakubu has demonstrated that it is incapable of non-partisanship and and as such cannot be vested with the conduct of the Kogi governorship supplementary election as well as the December 5 Bayelsa governorship election.
“As a result, caucus demands the immediate resignation of the chairman and all national commissioners of INEC to pave the way for a new non-partisan commission to conduct the forthcoming elections.
“Caucus also demands the immediate resignation of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mallam Abubakar Malami for deliberately misleading INEC into arriving at the unconstitutional decision of allowing APC to substitute its candidate in the inconclusive election”, the communique read.
The PDP further stated that in order to save the nation’s democracy from imminent collapse, it would, as a critical stakeholder, immediately challenge INEC’s unlawful and unconstitutional decision in the court.
It also raised the alarm that the AGF, INEC and APC are creating a scenario where a loser in a primary will bid his time for the winning candidate to finish election and then have him either poisoned or assassinated before the final collation of results.
The party, therefore, called on the international community to prevail on the APC-led federal government to stop this ceaseless assault on our democracy.

Woman shocked to receive a bill for $1.4 trillion from her bank

Imagine opening your account and finding a bill for $1.4 trillion. Thankfully, Angela Kwong knew the bank had made an error on her account, or at least she hoped they would see it that way.
1
The woman from Oahu, Hawaii, said it was lucky she checked her bank account when she did, or else she would have been dealing with an outstanding balance that would keep several countries going for a bit.
Angela said she was shocked when she logged into her bank account statement Tuesday morning only to find an outstanding balance of $710 billion – twice.
Local news station KHON2 say she immediately got in touch with her bank.
She told the station:
“I was shocked, and I couldn’t believe it. The first time I saw it, I had to go to my bathroom and get my glasses on to make sure it wasn’t just because of my bad eyes.”
The news station said the bank initially told her their hands were tied.
Angela said:
“I called the customer service line and they said their system was down and my number was down and surprisingly, they said they couldn’t take the number down and was unable to return my phone call. They said there was nothing they could do.”
“It’s kind of funny when you look at it, but it’s also kind of scary, because if the number was a little bit more normal, then I may have sort of overlooked it.
“I’ll definitely keep my eye on my phone and my computer and my bank statements.”
Kwong’s case was due to a technical glitch that the bank finally managed to sort out, but would not say where the demand came from.
It said:
“First Hawaiian Bank’s online banking platform experienced a glitch where customers viewing their accounts online were temporarily shown an incorrect balance. Within minutes of discovering the glitch, we were able to resolve the issue.
“No actual customer information or balances were affected or compromised, the glitch was limited to the view shown in the online banking environment. We want to sincerely apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this may have caused and we are glad that this was resolved very quickly.”
But they still didn’t explain why $710 billion.

NCC leads race to end unsolicited SMS in Nigeria

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has charged the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to find a lasting solution to the menace of unsolicited Short Message Service (SMS) immediately.
This followed claims by the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers of Nigeria (NATCOMS) that telephone users in the country lose about N30 billion to unsolicited SMS) monthly from the activities of Value Added Service Providers (VAS).
These were parts of the fallouts of the 4th quarter /Open Forum of Industry Consumer Advisory Forum (ICAF) held in Lagos recently on the theme: “effective service delivery: issues and challenges”.
Alhaji Abdullahi Maikano, director, Consumer Affairs Department, NCC, disclosed that the NCC will meet with the operators soon to identify what could be the challenges they are facing in checkmating the activities of VAS providers on their networks, stressing that this has become very important so that consumers will not continue to suffer from the menace.
But Deolu Ogunbanjo, NATCOMS president, said so many Nigerians are bleeding through this menace.
Ogunbanjo, who said the time has come for better regulation of this aspect of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, based his analysis on the fact that on the average, telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria spent about N200, which the operators deduct from their accounts without permission.
The MNOs (MTN, Globacom; Airtel and Etisalat) on the other hand have claimed that most of the unsolicited text messages do not come directly from them but through the VAS providers.
At the end of the meeting, the NCC was urged to meet with the Network Operators/Service Providers and VAS licensees to urgently address the issues of unsolicited text messages and automatic data renewal.
Industry Consumer Advisory Forum (ICAF) was established by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) about Six (6) years ago as an independent body responsible for advising and making recommendations to NCC on issues and challenges affecting consumers of telecoms products and services in Nigeria.
The objective of ICAF is to ensure that all stakeholders are carried along in articulating a regulatory process that will promote and ensure consumer protection at all times.
At the 4th quarter/open Forum issues on creating customer-centric culture; paradigm shift from customer satisfaction to customer experience led the discussion, even as participants looked at ''Issues and Challenges of Effective Service Delivery''
However, ICAF wants 'Service Providers' Compliance to addressed the furore on unsolicited SMS, automatic data plan renewal and credit depletion'
The forum further enjoined Service Providers to progress from customer satisfaction to positive customer experience for all their subscribers.
The forum notes with great concern the numerous complaints of unsolicited text messages in the telecom industry and the need for a comprehensive framework from the NCC to address this issue in order to ameliorate the nuisance this has become.
ICAF also urged NCC to put pressure on the National Assembly to urgently pass the Critical National Infrastructure Bill; while the Commission to address the challenge of Multiple Taxation in the sector and canvass the adoption of the Lagos State smart city model to the remaining states of the Federation.
The Commission and the Service Providers were also encouraged to step up subscriber awareness campaign on industry issues and challenges.
