Arguably
the most powerful secondary school in Nigeria, Barewa college is
located in Zaria, Kaduna State, Northern Nigeria, It was founded in 1921
by British Governor General Hugh Clifford.
At the time it was the only secondary school in the entire Northern Nigeria. First named “Katsina College.” Renamed “Kaduna College” in 1938 “Government College, Zaria” in 1949 then settling on “Barewa College.”
Presently one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most celebrated post primary school in Northern Nigeria up to the early 1960s.
The college is known for the large number of elites from the Northern region that passed through the school’s academic buildings and counts among its alumni, five of whom were at one time Nigerian Heads of State, last of which was late president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
